CLUB CHALLENGE COIN!
http://flytheroadclub.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=817&stc=1&d=1232122833
Miracleman89 came to me with an idea a few months ago about creating a Club Challenge Coin. As many of you know, he works as a dispatcher in a local police station. And he said that cops carry them as a way to "challenge" each other when they happen to meet sometime. There also used by bikers, military, and many other groups.
Maybe you have some stories you can tell about the use of a challenge coin, and we would love to hear about them.
Well, I thought that this would be a really great idea to create a special challenge coin for this club. We can have the club shield on it, the logo, and even the Persu Hybrid logo on it. As you can see from the samples above, we can add all sorts of elements to this coin, and have it in many colors and most any size. Plus it can have one design on one side, and a completely different design on he other side.
To find out the history of the Challenge Coin, click this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenge_coin
So, what do you think? Do you have any ideas for the design of this club challenge coin? How about stories? Do you have any personal stories you can tell?

I have many 'challenge' coins from units I belonged to and that actually exist. I personally will hold off getting one of these until the 'Persu Hybrid' is a REALITY. Until then, if I am 'challenged', I will just reply with a ''Phantom Coin'!!!!!!:)......to match the 'Phantom Vehicle':(!!!!!

rogwild,
These Challenge Coins are more to identify yourself as a CLUB MEMBER more than any affiliation with Persu Mobility. As you know, we talk about many vehicles and many subjects in this club. But the Persu Hybrid is our main focus, of course.
But, to be sure, we could include the Persu logo, or we could completely leave it out of the design. But if a member is a follower/fan of the Persu Hybrid, then I think it would be pretty nice to include that in the design. But that's just my opinion.

I think rogwild's got it right: until the Persu actually hits the road, there won't be enough enthusiasm in the club to justify a coin. Keep the idea in your back pocket for a while, Derwin, and bring it back out at a better time.

Like I said, this is the FlyTheRoadClub, and we discuss MANY matters here other than the Persu Hybrid. The coin will be a symbol of a persons membership of this club, and not necessarily a sign of any enthusiasm for Persu Mobility. It's all about this club.
But, as I said, those that don't like the idea don't have to participate in the design or in obtaining one when they come out......It won't be "mandatory" to own a coin in order to be a member! r:o:f:l:2:2:1

These coins are not very expensive to have made, so I don't think you would need tons of people participating to justify the cost. If the coin actually comes to pass, I'll buy a few and convert them into Geocoins so that they may travel the world through geocaches. I'll assign one a mission to travel to the closest cache where Carvers are built!
Here is some info on Geocoins (http://www.geocaching.com/track/geocoin.aspx) and what they are. There are also alot of links on the page as where to have coins made.

I just clicked on your link, baja. That sounds pretty cool. But I don't think I'm fully understanding the concept. Are they saying that the Geocoin has a tracking device in it that can be tracked wherever it happens to be? If so, I think that would be pretty interesting.
Wow! I think this has some great FUN possibilities for club events!
By the way....How would you "convert" one of our coins into a "geocoin"?
Please give me some more information about that.

Any coin can be converted pretty easy actually - any medallion can be converted into a Geocoin, or any item made into a Travel Bug by purchasing a tracking number from Groundspeak and registering it ($5). (Travel Bug numbers actually come on a set of dog tags, one of which is attached to the item, the other kept by the owner) The number is then stamped or engraved onto the coin. With the tracking number anyone who finds the item logs in, types in the tracking number and enters into the log where they found (or saw) the item (it has it's own webpage); tells a story about the find or even attaches a picture of where they found it. My whole truck is actually a travel bug! See it Here (http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=1737956). I have a travel bug magnet on the tailgate with the tracking number, I just put it on, and nobody has discovered it yet on the road - so no logs yet.
Geocaching is one of the most enjoyable hobbies I do - it has taken me on hikes to places I never would have gone to otherwise.

Wow! I have never even heard of this, but it sounds fascinating. Well, you've just introduced me to a whole new world.....thanks! thu:mbs:up:22
Now I think I'll go google this and find out all I can about it.

GEOCACHING!!!! That is the name I was trying to think of!!! I have a couple of buddies that live in Illinois and do that stuff. You use GPS nav and track down geocach locations. This is the exact same idea I had too! I planned on buying a couple and making one into a geocach coin! Making it's destination Carver Engineering! That' too funny! Great minds think alike!
Also Big D, I don't care for the colored ones. they tend to have the plastic color things come off. Atleast this has been my experiance!

So, you think a plain Bronze coin would be best?
How does this work, though? Should I have each coin marked with a special sequential number or something?

Well, I contacted a factory that will make our challenge coins. I got a good quote for coins with these specifications...
diameter: 50mm
thickness: 3mm
material: Brass
plating: Bronze
3-D Surface
These coins can have a different design on BOTH sides. So now we just have to come up with a good design for both sides of the coin. Any and all ideas and suggestions are welcome, and they are much appreciated!
The coins will be this size and look like this picture below, except for the design part, that is!....

I think this is going to be pretty fun designing this thing. Let's use our imagination and be creative!

who did you contact??? Symbol Arts does a great job! and yes
this:
diameter: 50mm
thickness: 3mm
material: Brass
plating: Bronze
3-D Surface
sounds about right! And as far as numbering goes I don't think it is necessary!

I checked symbol arts, and they are a fine company. But I found another company a bit less expensive...but not by much! All of these Challenge Coin places charge about the same thing, and that's with a minimum purchase of 300 coins. But these babies will soon become collectors' items...and very valuable!
Now we just have to get a good design to go on each side. I think I may contact CelticFlyer to help us with the design of this coin. Heck, it's what he does.....and he's GREAT at it!

Instead of having "a special sequential number", you might consider having an area that is 'flat' so that individuals can have something (ie. name, lic. #, etc.) engraved on it at a later time to personalize it.

So THAT'S why you wanted a one-color version of the FTRC seal! ;)
Cool concept, guys.

Great idea, rogwild! I think giving members the ability to personalize each coin themselves is fantastic. cool:thu:mb1

By the way, that seal needs to updated with the new Persu Logo!

I've been thinking about the DESIGN of this coin. I have a gazillion ideas, but need some input from those that are interested in this project. Rogwilds idea for having a small flat blank area for personalization is good, and I think we'll go with that. But now we have to fill in all the other space with something!
This coin will be engraved in 3-D on BOTH sides with a DIFFERENT design. I was thinking one side of the coin can have a CLUB theme containing the club logo, shield, and website address. Now how to actually put that all together so that it looks good is another thing all together.
The flip side of the coin could have the theme of Persu and Carver....but I'm not sure. Maybe have the Persu logo in one area, and then have the Carver logo with a 3-D image of the CarverOne...? Just thinking outloud on this, I'm not really sure.
If anybody has any other ideas, please feel free to share them with us.

I know you mentioned a going with someone else besides symbol arts but I thought it would be a good idea to post a link to Symbol Arts website where they show examples. It might help give people some ideas.

I was thinking the same thing Derwin - Fly the road club logo and address on one side, and a Persu image on the other, with our engraving plate in the mix.

Well, I think it's safe to say that we have the "theme" for both sides of the coin. But now we have to come up with a DESIGN for both sides.
I think this is a job for CelticFlyer! (Superman of graphic arts!) thu:mbs:up:22
