The university announced today that the viruses, which infect bacteria but are harmless to humans, build the positively and negatively charged ends of lithium-ion batteries (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9129685). The batteries, according to MIT, have the same energy capacity and power performance as state-of-the-art rechargeable batteries that are being considered to power plug-in hybrid cars and personal electronic devices.
This also from Comuterworld (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9130968&intsrc=news_ts_head).
About time we put some viruses back into the work pool... working for us instead of against us. Pretty smart to use the same type of viral work that is used to gene splice things.
Professor Belcher said: "To us, the environmental aspects are very important.
"Put simply, we cant do anything that kills our organisms."
