Holy mackerel, you could knock me over with a feather :
(from the NY Times)
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/08/business/energy-environment/08greenoil.html?_r=1&hp
The good news: at least some of them are looking at biofuels (NOT corn, the most inefficient (space/water/density) method of biofuel generation there is, actually)
The bad news, as we know:
"The oil companies have frequently run advertisements expressing their interest in new forms of energy, but their actual investments have belied the marketing claims. "
Nobody thought GM would come to the brink of bankruptcy either...

I beg to differ!!! I did back in 1993 and to be completely honest I am suprised they are still in business! After owning a Cavalier Z24 that spent 4 of the 6 months I owned it, in the shop getting repaired, I figured it was only a matter of time! Especially with that kind of quality!!!! For the record, it was purchased new and when I test drove it, they had to take the plastic off some of the stuff just so I could drive it! It was the biggest piece of trash I thought I would ever drive. Well, I was wrong my mother inherited a Cadillac Cimarron, which was nothing more then a glorified Cavalier with Cadillac badges but, It was worse!! Both were GM products. Then there was my buddies S-10, it was always needing valve springs replaced because they break and it was driven by a guy who was like a stepford child! He always drove responsibly and as much as I would try I could not convince him that he wouldn't get pulled over for going 5 over the speed limit! GM just build things as cheap as possible and they just don't care!!!!

C'mon, Brian, you really didn't "predict" the collapse of GM back in 1993. You may have thought they were a crap company putting out crap products, but that's another thing altogether. There are a whole lot of companies putting out garbage, and that's not just limited to vehicles, either! But that doesn't mean that they're going to go bankrupt. Back in 1993 no serious person could/would have even "dreamed" that GM would completely collapse.
But, hey, I understand your point. They've put out garbage vehicles for a long time, and probably didn't care about it. True enough. So I think they deserve this fate. But can't you also say this about Ford and other companies that aren't going bankrupt?

You can ask my friends Derwin!!! I said to them back then, "If they continue to produce low quality cars like the one I bought, they will go Bankrupt!!!" A business can not stay in business long if they produce garbage!!! Now, I did not predict exactly how long it would take, but I did say this was going to happen. I watched too many friends buy Chevy and have all kinds of problems, not to be serious when I said this!!! Now, I don't even get into my whole thing about disappointing concepts year after year, which if I were to have based it only on that, I would not have predicted a collapse, but I was talking about quality. People use to talk trash about foreign cars door handles falling off while going down the road, now they say that about American cars! It was only a matter of time!

Same thing happened to US Auto manfacturers back during the '70 gas crunch. They pulled through after Uncle helped them out and later made the same mistakes putting them in the same position once again.
