Bill Gates of Microsoft fame, is listed as one of the inventors on a recent patent application for an "Electromagnetic engine." What's that mean? According to the patent filing, it somehow "converts mechanical energy of a piston to and from electrical energy during each piston cycle." There are two engine designs illustrated in the patent, and the basic premise of both is to combine the electrical generating capabilities of a generator with the moving pistons of an internal combustion engine.

Also on the patent filing is a design for a "plasma injector." Ostensibly a replacement for a spark plug, the plasma injector would kick off "a chemical reaction" (think combustion cycle) that would be required to get the piston moving in the first place. It's all rather interesting stuff, and if you've got an hour or two to digest it, click here (http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PG01&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=%2220090091138%22.PGNR.&OS=DN/20090091138&RS=DN/20090091138).

Humm, interesting concept; not really creating any NEW energy, but harnessing some of the 'wasted' energy of the rather 'inefficient' ICE that is wasted in heat and friction. It will all depend upon how MUCH ENERGY it can obtain, and how much the added technology will COST and WEIGH (including 'storage' batteries), if the added weight will adversely affect mileage, and if the consumer will think the added 'benefits' are worth the COST.
Again...."There is no FREE lunch".

Hi guys,

Anyone remember FreePistonPower from several months ago? The basic idea seems to be the same, except for the plasma injection business. I think the other concept was to run on bio-diesel. I like the idea because it would make for a smaller, more powerful, less complicated genset. Is this the next generation of the concept? By someone who has the cohones to Git'er done? Hope so!

agr:1 I'm with you 100% on this. And one thing I think we can all safely say..... Bill Gates does indeed have the "cohones" to get this thing done.

Wow, half a page of posts and not a single satire about a new MS product?
