Not being current on what it takes to get a car through U.S. Customs and registered with the D.M.V. these days and with Carver seemingly going under (SIGH!) it left me wondering...
... is there anyone out there that was able to get one here in the U.S.?
Is so what are your thoughts about ongoing maintenance and parts availability.

You would need to buy one as a kit vehicle, without engine or drivetrain installed and figure out how to use an engine that has been emission approved for US roads, then install it and the rest of the drivetrain.

Ian was able to import 2 (?) that were being used by Venture Vehicles ... not sure how the heck he did that. I looked into bring a vehicle back from Germany once in the 70's and the costs then were in the $10K to $20K range.

Venture Vehicles (Ian) imported those Carver vehicles as a manufacturer. Importing a vehicle is no problem as long as you can show that you are a manufacturer, and will be using them in the development process. At least this is what I have believed to be the case.

You can import anythign as long as it is for display, race, or show only purposes for no more than 12 months. So you couldnt do it with something you want to own and drive for more than a year. After that you get into crash testing etc unless its a kit vehicle that comes without a drivetrain and engine installed.

My dad has a dealer license and matching plates that he can put on any car he needs to drive. Either in the back window or hanging outside the trunk. I wonder if this would have worked. Of course it's all kind of moot at the moment. Darn it all.

A dealer plate, unfortunately, wouldn't help in this situation. Dealer plates can only be used to temporarily drive cars already certified to use in the US (which doesn't include the Carver.)
Manufacturer plates, on the other hand, can be used on prototype cars and imports that haven't passed US certification tests yet (like the Carver.)

I wonder if anybody has tried to do this. I guess we would have heard from them if they had!
Has anybody considered contacting the people at Carver and asking them if this would be an option?
It would be interesting to find out IF it were an option, and what the COST of it would be.
Heck, if the cost was low, I would be VERY interested in doing it! That way I could be "Flying The Road" before any of you muggers!

I would have totally done it. And I'm kind of surprised that Carver didn't try this. Perhaps they didn't want to sell non-functional units. But there are a few UK builder that sell units over here complete sans engine and perhaps trans. But they partner with a company over here that puts in the engine and trans if you want. Noble was doing this with their cars.
I would think you could but one there. Have someone pull the engine and ship the two separate. Then put it back together here?

I have a nice one for sale at $46,000. Can arrange shipping to the US for a reasonable cost.

The issue with the Carver is its expense. Nothing on it is mass manufactured. There is no way to get a Carver into the ballpark of what most of us US enthusiasts are willing to pay.

Well, strip the motor out, and send me just the tilting unit and the shell, and maybe we can talk!
I'll offer a cold $10 grand, and I'll even pay the shipping!
You know my number if you want to talk! :burning:rubber:

Is it possible to get a kit? If so, does anyone know where? Who should I contact? I've always wanted one, since I saw the Carver cutting it up in Europe. I'll take a kit.
By the way, What it would take to start a "Kit Store" in the U S.?
If anyone knows please share with me.
Thanks
