Hi people,
Sorry for the delay (where have I heard that before?) -- but it's been a busy past few weeks. For starters, both Howard and I were invited to the Dow Jones VentureOne Summit in Redwood Shores. We'd been selected by Dow Jones' Company as one of the “Top 45 Companies to Watch in 2008”. According to Dow Jones, the venture-backed start-up companies on this list represent "the most interesting and most promising companies in the market today.”
Notice they didn't say "most promising 'green-tech' companies" -- they mean the most promising of all VC-backed companies, in every business sector. The judging was done by a board comprised of leading venture capitalists from Accel, Battery Ventures, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, The Mayfield Fund, Menlo Ventures, North Bridge Venture Partners, as well as the Wall Street Journal (a Dow Jones company).
Howard also presented at Pipper Jaffray's Third Annual Clean Technology and Renewables Conference in New York City. I was otherwise engaged, but I'm told Howard did an outstanding job.
New employees
We've also had some additions to the company, including an EVP of Engineering, Steve Duffy.
Steve comes to us out of Lotus Engineering, Magna, Jaguar Cars, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, Nissan, and Ford Motors. He has over 20 years of experience in automotive design & development, total system engineering, prototype planning & build, program management, plant set-up and production, vehicle accessories, launch evaluation, and product testing & validation.
Steve's been spending the last few weeks getting up to speed, and working with our newly selected, vehicle engineering partners out of Detroit. You heard that correctly: the vehicle that I've said "Detroit would never build"... may actually be built there -- or at least, the first few thousand or so. It's still our intention to set up our own assembly in California sometime in the future.
These have also been some boring internal upgrades: an "internet-based Collaborative Product Development (CPD) platform that tightly integrates product design data with the business processes of the product lifecycle across an enterprise value-chain." Stated more simply, we're simply getting bigger, and responding by getting our collective $#!+ together -- and becoming a far more organized company in the process. It's great to have a wonderful idea, but this is how companies actually succeed.
Build progress
You've probably seen the photos of our "sand rail" hybrid propulsion test-bed. We're now in the process of building our "Alpha" vehicle which integrates the hybrid system into the newly engineered 3-wheel tilting chassis. While not as pretty as the final vehicle, it will mark the first complete systems integration for the VentureOne. This is a critical milestone, and we'll keep you posted on our progress as it occurs.
"C" vs. "D"
Many of you participated in our survey "A new Design in Motoring" last month. In fact, we had a total of over 3,200 responses to our survey (almost 3 times the number of our first survey). Although it was close race, it was pretty clear which design won. I ask again that you be patient -- please don't speculate -- we'll be announcing the result very soon.
Thanks again for all of your continued help and your support. You're the real reason we started this company.
Cheers,
-- Ian

This is all great news! However, I am concerned, Very concerned, about V1 being built in Detroit!!!!!! To be completely honest this prospect scare the living ...... out of me!!!

But as they say keep your friends close and your enemies closer! I just hope Ian is aware of this and can step in if Detroit tries to sabotage the V1!

Finally, I was getting worried. A friend at work is ever the pessimist and the lack of updates was giving him good fodder.

Hey MM,
Perhaps it is more a question of availability to ramp up production faster while Venture builds it's own facility?
Can't wait to see photos/progress on the "Alpha"!! Think it is being built by Calmotors with Swift engineering input?

I'm glad they have found a 'ready made' production facility. One of my major concerns about Vv making their 'Production Projection' was that there had been no talk of 'site selection', facility building plans, workforce procurement and training. They 'may' have solved all these by one trip to Detroit.

I just hope it isn't GM!!!!! those guys cut more corners then any other car maker out there!!! IMO!!! I would rather they were built by Kia or Hyundia then GM!!!!!

I am sure GM won't be involved. Detroit does not mean "Big Three". It means "city in Michigan" where most US automotive engineering and manufacturing resources are.

Besides, it gets down to the buy versus build decision most companies have to deal with. It takes hundreds of millions of dollars to build an auto plant. Although the V1 should require less, we're still talking about tens of millions. Engineering an assembly line is probably more daunting than engineering the vehicle. This is something that is far better off contracted out. And Detroit is where you are going to find the company to contract with.

I just hope the UAW isn't involved in the Detroit operation, because I seriously doubt I'd buy one if they built it.
Detroit doesn't build cars to last... but when you have a passenger module that tilts in relation to the rest of the vehicle, I want it built strong and built right.

Ran careful now!!! My dad and many other members of my family are members of the UAW! We aren't a part of the Detroit division because they work in the Peoria IL area for Caterpillar!(building construction equipment like tractors and bulldozers)

I was glad to hear from the creators; it's encouraging to be kept apprised of their progress, even if their reports are few and far between. Being a newbie here, I can only imagine how the "old-timers" must feel! I've looked at some very old posts on the FlyTheRoad forum, and see screen names that don't appear to have made recent posts. Is that a sign of impatience, loss of interest, or just ordinary attrition?

I've moderated on forums before, and have noticed that many users choose to lurk, while a tight band of die hard enthusiasts often keep the virtual conversations going.

About time. That is good news regarding the alpha vehicle, and also about them picking version D. ;) I thought that swift was doing the engineering? Also, the survey was just to decide the design direction, correct? They will continue to refine it if I am not mistaken.

I just noticed the "wink" after you said they picked version D. Well, in my opinion, I think that is the version that won. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

When the announcement happens I fully expect the photoshop gurus to start pumping out all the requisite imagery. Suitable for desktop wallpaper of course!

Hell, I might even dig out my old copy of Photoshop LE and give it a shot. Aww crap, did I really say that. I doubt that I have enough active brain cells for that learning curve.
