These are the choices listed on the VV pre-register form.
Which did you choose?
Yellow was mine.
If you have another choice not listed feel free to post it.

I chose yellow because of the safety factor and because I think it is a bright and energetic color. It should come as no surprise; look at the color of my last car... ;)

The hardest thing you can ask a Gemini is what color do you want?? :-Þ I've always liked dark green (if it's the right shade) but I dunno how it'll look on a V-1, but ya can't go wrong with orange on a vehicle like this. I hope that answers the question lol.

Thanks! Actually, the color is called "Grabber Orange" and it was last used by Ford in 1970. They brought it back in 2007 and 2008 for the Mustang, and in 2008 for the Ranger pickup.
I loved the Mustang and it was a lot of fun, but I'm tired of them. I've had five in the past twelve years. It was time for something new...

On the Carver website they offer a stealth colour option - Matt black everything including the wheels. I image everyone will want to personalize their own V1s, some more extreme than others. Make mine black and scary!!!!

No offense taken, dude. Listen, you don't drive an orange car unless you've got a thick skin!
The color has been compared to taxis, school buses, and the old California Department of Transportation trucks. I've heard it all. I just hate blending in. Car color is important to me; it's a reflection of the owner. And by the looks of it, there are a lot of bland, uninteresting people on the roads today. Clearly many are imagination deprived, or at least afraid to stand apart from the herd. Of course, the V1 will stand out regardless of the color; it could be painted in black primer and it would still garner stares!

Actually, white ranks right up there as one of the safest colors. Highly visible. It also keeps your options open should you decide to add stripes, accents, etc. Can't go wrong with white.
Come to think of it, I also like the silver/gray approach. Like the color of fighter planes. How about a "Blue Angels" theme (blue with yellow stripes)?
Miracleman89

Being an old Air Force guy I'm partial to the Thunderbird colors. White would work very well there.
CelticFlyer
03-13-2008, 05:14 PM
Or how about the "Snow Birds" for our Canadian friends? I think they're red and white. The possibilities are endless!
Even better, why not follow the paint scheme of the X-Wing fighter from Star Wars or the Viper from Battlestar Galactica? Sci-Fi fans, weigh in... Now the wheels are really turning! The thought has also occurred to me that we could have those vinyl decals applied that could cover the entire vehicle from nose to tail (like those larger-than-life advertisements on buses). In that event, virtually ANY design could be executed.
MarkH
03-13-2008, 05:49 PM
I wasn't going to mention the sci-fi themes for fear of exposing my geekiness but now that you mention it I can also see it in white/lt.grey aztec pattern with a starfleet red stripe down the side like a shuttle craft and the name Venture Flyer painted there.
Yes, I know. Hopeless.
This also reveals the need for a final design and some time with my dusty old copy of Photoshop LE.

Yeelllloooow! I want it to be seen and of course I want to be seen in it. My low-flying will accommodate the noticability factor but what the heck, a 'lean yellow' is a 'mean yellow'.
There's a Ford color called "ultraviolet". It's a really great purple color on some of their cars. I think it could look good on the V1.

Amen to that, brother! In Sacramento, you can't be TOO visible! People constantly run red lights and fail to stop at intersections. So, I figure the high-impact color will help my fellow motorists take note. Yellow's my favorite too.

Nice! As much as I like dark green, it just doesn't seem to go with the V-1 :-(

Thanks, RAN.
I use Photoshop all the time. Sometimes, I actually look like I know what I'm doing!
Some of it is pretty simple, whereas other operations involve a great deal of complexity and patience. Changing colors was relatively easy once I created a couple of "paths" around portions of the image. Then, it's just a matter of creating an adjustment layer, where you virtually overlay a color over the original image.
The individual who created the original image made it simple for me; the silver skin served as a perfect canvas for alterations. Very smart (and thoughtful of them, wasn't it?).

Miracleman89
03-22-2008, 02:46 PM
I thought radar worked by sending out a signal and when it was reflected it would get a signal back! It was my understanding the SR71 Blackbird had radar absorbing paint! Did I have that backwards????
cpaddock
03-22-2008, 04:00 PM
Radar ABSORBING paint, correct! Primary radar slipperiness is result of angled surfaces
which don't bounce back signals. Formula for this "paint" would be top secret. Popular urban myth is that black primer on hood will foil radar gun. Sure, yeah that's it! Speed all you want! :) :) :)
Aloooooha!
MVRacing
03-22-2008, 04:09 PM
The SR 71 radar absorbing paint diminished the radar signature making it harder to detect and lock on. It wasn't until this paint technology was combined with the angled reflective surfaces that the planes were nearly radar invisable.
Flat black paint on a car does absolutely nothing to affect traffic radar.

You weren't supposed to divulge that! Don't suppose "they" are reading this forum anyway. Too busy street racing..... :(
Heraclid
03-22-2008, 04:21 PM
I'm not sure that the Blackbird used paint to absorb radar signals, but maybe it did. Its overall shape was the main thing, but it did have absorptive materials applied in certain areas, and paint may have been one of them. I'm not sure if the titanium skin had anything to do with stealth, but it probably was just for strength while being lighter. Certain non-metallic airframe materials definitely do add to stealthiness.
Evidently the Blackbird was not very stealthy at all in reality and was regularly ID'd on radar and had a huge IR signature at high speeds. But it was still very hard to bring down for other reasons (I assume that extreme cruising altitude and extremely high speed were major factors but can't really explain just how). Apparently the SR-71 was "seen" plenty (partially due to the signature of its own exhaust) and a few thousand attempts were made to shoot them down, and yet not one was ever brought down.
Nowadays specially-infused paints are a part of it, because shape alone isn't effective against low frequency radar. The way the paint is made isn't particularly secret though - it has ferrite (iron or iron alloy) in it. I've also heard of not trying to absorb the signal but actually reflecting it back as a method of achieving stealth. The key is to reflect it in a specific direction other than that from whence it originated. Don't ask me how that is done though.

03-22-2008, 04:36 PM
Thanks fellas. I was just making a point if you were going to hang rockets on the wings (from an earlier post concerning road rage tools) maybe a flat black color was in order to immitate Blackbird paint.

Funny isn't it how this country could develope and use the SR71 in the 60's and yet 100 mpg is unattainable every since. I don't know about you, but I have been a VW user on and off since '66 and have never changed my mind about efficiency.

I saw the public unveiling of a SR-71 at the Virginia Aviation Museum in Richmond a few years ago. It was stunning. Of course, what I was looking at was a mere shell; they gutted most of the avionics from the cockpit and removed the engines, but it was still a very unique looking plane.
This plane remains one of my favorites of all time, and I've been around a few in my day. I worked on the E2-C Hawkeye program for Grumman Aerospace for three years in Bethpage, New York. Right across the parking lot from Plant 5, where they drop tested F-14 Tomcats and built the Space Shuttle wings. Very cool stuff, my friends. Maybe it's only natural that I end up pining over a car that bears design cues from a jet fighter.
Talk about "HYBRID." This is a cross between a jet fighter and a daily driver! =D

03-22-2008, 08:05 PM
Yes, the SR-71 is a very unique airplane. I remember when I saw my first one "flying". It was 1966 at Eglin AFB, FL, and one was in the traffic pattern to land to be "tested" (their existence was not public knowledge then) in the large "Climatic Hanger". I thought; "That is odd, a flying black Pencil (in profile on downwind). Later, when I graduated from the Air Force Academy, our class of 1971, had the SR-71 on our class rings (seniors 71).
The Blackbird was a technological marvel, as much for the record short time it took to get it from drawing board into production as for its amazing abilities. It was also designed in the days of the slide rule, which is even more impressive.

I'm glad you folks like my dabbling. The real talent was creating these illustrations to begin with! I had no hand in that; I'm just colorizing them using Photoshop. All that requires is a little time and patience. Luckily, the silver cast to the original illustrations makes a perfect canvas on which to work.
I worked up a couple more versions. I'm not sure you meant the burnt orange I just posted when you said "that red" or not. I proceeded to work on that premise and created a burnt orange passenger pod and adjusted the color of the engine pod so it looked a little more like pewter than silver.
While I personally don't really care for this combination, it does propose some interesting paint schemes. I would definitely opt to counter a primary color with a neutral one, rather than combine two primaries. Burnt orange and pewter are fine, but combining red with blue or green with yellow might not look so good.
Hmm... Yellow and green? Do I hear someone calling for a John Deere edition VentureOne?

MHarveyM; welcome to the clan. I'm sure there will be many 'custom' versions once we all get our V~1's. The current idea (?) is to have the body panels made of a poly-plastic (like motorcycle parts) with the color 'embedded' in them. A translucent panel option would be ideal for painting (or put 'back-lighting'--ie. UFO effect). I'm sure they would require some 'prep' (sanding, sealing, priming, etc.) Some people have mentioned those vinyl 'skins' with with the colorful scenes. The 'Sky's the limit'.

Howzit Celtic! Man your Photo shop work is way cool....I am envious! Just might have to take the plunge and get with the program. I was out walking the dog yesterday when a new VW pulled into the parking lot sporting a set of wheels that were nearly indentical to the current renderings on the V1. Went out and photographed them at appropriate angles to match V 1 pic. Downloaded, printed, reduced, cut and pasted (actual) them
onto the print-out, then copied that. Copy that? Here's a couple more suggested "fills"
for you. Snakeskin. Alligator skin. Saw a van the other day covered in "grass". They were a yard maintenence outfit. Vinal wraps do tend to look a little flat after a while, as the ink fades and the "wallpaper" joints start to show. Keep up the great work!

BTW CelticFlayer....did you notice the "wheels" on the NY auto show mock-up have FIVE
lugs? There were five on the VW wheels also. I guess you are going to have to update your template now to incorporate the VG's, Logo emblems, and enhanced shine on the glass, as well as the rear roof "posts". Now if we can just get the wheels "chromed" we be styling! (Hope you know I don't expect anything and certainly don't want to pressure you, so please take these thoughts for what they are worth....I just find that the best way to manifest something is to start with a picture....)

Looks like the VOLT designers were aware of consumer's concerns with 'visibility' and decided to add the 'distortion panels' to expand the small standard windows. Kind of 'geeky' and probably not too functional.

That is the one color that would make me not want to buy one. Pi$$ yellow is the color of the university of Oregon ducks. It's just plain repugnant. Funny you should say that, because so many people called my Mustang "yellow." I got tired of correcting them! It's called "grabber orange." In all fairness, it does have quite a bit of yellow in it, though.
I like yellow because it's a bright, cheerful color and it is highly visible. It's not for everyone, though. And I can understand why. It's a bit too bold for some people! I, on the other hand, have never been one to stick with decidedly safe colors (by means of popularity), as my choice of grabber orange indicates.
All I can say is I'm glad the fine folks at VentureOne didn't adopt Henry Ford's line when offering color choices: "They can have any color they like, so long as it's black."

My second car was a '95 Ford Probe, and the paint color on it was called Chameleon Blue. The car almost looked purple in color, except where the sunlight was directly hitting it, where it would be a light blue. Very cool effect.
All these color mods we're seeing here (very nice work, CelticFlyer, BTW) makes me wonder: are the panels going to be easily paintable, or will attempts of an aftermarket paint job look terrible?

Body panels will be thermo-formed plastic, like most motorcycle body bits, not a composite layup as this is quite a bit more expensive. The plastic will be colored thru and thru so scratches won't show so bad. Post #14 this thread shows prismacoat on pastic panels, so it can be done!

Yeah, well I'm not sure if "Taupe" is what the fine folks at Venture Vehicles would call that color, but that's what it looked like to me. All I had to go by were those itty bitty color swatches they had beside the radial buttons on their pre-registration page.
To tell you the truth, I wasn't a big fan of those "earth tones," but they're starting to grow on me. The taupe is a soothing color, and the sandstone reminds me of what has come to be known as "champagne." Both of these colors have been on cars currently in the market, but neither of them are ones I'd choose over the others.
If any of you decide to print this pic out, try converting the image from the RGB color space to CMYK. Most printers will render CMYK images more faithfully than those created in RGB. When I first printed out my FTRC poster, the V1 looked somewhat green because I hadn't made the color conversion beforehand. You can make the color conversion if you open the file in Adobe Photoshop. I don't know if any other programs enable you to alter the color space, though. I'll forward high-res copies of this to those who requested copies of the FTRC poster image as well.
