This is so cool that it needs its own thread.
First, here's an example acheived on an old Caddy, 1962 as I remember. I had a 1962 blue one in the hardtop version. It road like a cloud. The pictures also show an approximate size. Pretty close I think.

Here are the RED and BLUE colors that I want to acheive, preferably with a variable light intensity level that is controlled by how hard you are pressing on the foot throttle pedal.

And of course there gas GOT to be a PA horn tucked away at both the front and rear ends of the VentureOne to provide the appropriate jet take-off noise to go with it. The front PA horn would be separately selectable for when you're wanting to pass someone and they need a little encouragement to GET OUT OF THE WAY!
Here is the button to push on the dashboard when you want to have A LITTLE MORE FUN!

This ought to get a bunch of creative juices flowing out there. What do you think? ;)
I'M GONNA DO IT ON MINE!

This might work for your sounds:
It has 4 recordable memories (M1-M4), so you could record a different jet engine noise (pitch / volume) and just push M1...M2...M3...M4....as you 'Rev-er-up'. The PTT button on the top left would give you the; "GET OUT OF MY WAY" voice capability. Also a volume control 'wheel' on the top right. I think the 'memories' are about 10-20 sec. each. Also a bunch of preprogrammed songs/sounds that can be entered into the memory positions. About $70-80.

Jack I love the afterburner idea!!!!!! I want one!!! let me know when you finish the prototype and You will have to walk me through it!!!!
Baja that video clip was too funny!

MM89, are you going for a 200mph version?

LOL! Funny stuff. That video is why I don't do my own mods.

Well If the V1 will hit 200 MPH then yeah I am all for it!! but the real question is can it do it and maintain 100mpg!!!=D

Okay, here's my version. I think one afterburner is enough.

Thanks for the link Rogwild. That would work, but I would need to be able to access the internal signal connections (wires) to be able to build the controls (activate buttons) into the dash. I might need to find more of an industrial model to do that.

the way things are going it might be quicker to build a v1 with a real afterburner then wait for Ian

:cool:Here is an updated version with a better trim ring.

I've been thinking on how one might actually build this thing such that it would present an active visual experience somewhat representative of an afterburner.
The best thing I can come up with at the moment is a dense array of high intensity LEDs with red ones in the center changing to blue ones at the outer ring. I'm thinking a bunch of concentric circles. As the throttle pedal is depressed, the LEDs start coming on beginning with the center red and progressing to the outer blue depending on how hard the pedal is depressed. Pedal to the metal as it were would turn them all on.
The whole idea is to achieve variability in the intensity of the display based on acceleration of the vehicle. I'm not sure if the driving signal should come from a potentiometer attached to the throttle pedal or an amperage sensor on the power leads to the drive hubs.
Seems like amperage would be a better choice. When a desired speed is reached, and you let off the pedal, the amperage at the wheel hub motors would decrease to a holding level.
I'm sure that there would be some appropriate signal present within the vehicle control electronics, that could be tapped with a photo-isolator. But I'd sure be hesitant to mess with that. That would likely immediately void any vehicle warranty.
Using an amperage loop sensor (AC drive voltage?), you would still need some control circuitry to translate the signal into outputs to the large number of separate LEDs. Perhaps a time delay off would be needed as well.
Any thoughts on the subject out there?

I've been playing around with a 3D model. This is what I'm thinking currently using 5mm LEDs in purple and blue. The actual LEDs are quite bright.

That is just too cool! I want one too. I also thought about some kind of fog effect when you open the door like in Back to the Future.

The fog effect is easy... dry ice. The only problem is it will kill you by suffocation!
Sorry AZEqualizer. I've always thought it is no fun in AZ. But I didn't know there was a law against it! du:n:n:o(

I think that you will find a large number of states that have regulations in regards to axillary lights on vehicles and the coloration of these lights. Most are intended to not confuse other drivers with emergency vehicles lighting.

Now I'm curious. Do you know what the actual rules are? There are plenty of customized cars, trucks and motorcycles that use these same colored LEDs for under vehicle lights and various locations on motorcycles, like around the engine. They also use them inside the vehicles for accent lights.
Are the rules different for inside and outside a vehicle? Another idea I have is for a strip of LEDs across the bottom inside of a rear window. Do you know if that would be a no-no as well?
Where would I look to discover the rules?

If you note a lot of the colored lighting in motorcycles and vehicles state "not for use while driving - for display only." Others laws involve direct vs indirect lighting and the definition of interior and exterior lighting and there in regards to regulation as well as acceptable colors dependent on viewing angle. Some states it is only regulated when lit others it is the potential (mostly this is for exterior direct lighting).
Yep I know a lot about lighting and the law in AZ as I am a retired police officer.... and I like to customize the features of my vehicles but I don't like tickets and then court orders requiring removal of said features.
Best to check local and state laws as well as any laws of the states you will be driving in as to auxiliary lighting.
Most state laws have a published copy available online. Also local car and bike clubs know where to find all the laws on these kinds of things. You have to look at all the amendments to the laws on vehicle lighting as well - sometimes things are hidden there.

Well, I just looked into the California DMV info and have come to the conclusion that you pretty much can't do anything fun. There is no way anything like the afterburner idea would ever fly (pun intended). Looks like about the only thing that might be acceptable would be a decal.
So much for THAT IDEA! :mad:exploding:
