2010 is shaping up to be a pivotal year in the American auto industry. From a product standpoint there will be a lot of interesting hardware in showrooms, including range-extending EVs, plug-in hybrids, clean diesels, pure electrics, and flex-fuel vehicles running on cellulosic ethanol. But it's also shaping up to be the year when the domestic industry will have to deal with its greatest challenge ever.

In short, the "Big Three" are running out of money, and running out fast. At its present spending rate, General Motors will burn through almost all the cash it has in the next 6 quarters. Ford can hold out a little bit longer. And Chrysler? Well, who the hell knows what's going on there?
John McElroy (http://www.autolinedetroit.tv/whatisad/) is host of the TV program "Autoline Detroit" (http://www.autolinedetroit.tv/). Every week he brings his unique insights as an auto industry insider to Autoblog readers.

Yep - 2010 is the magic year. Can't wait to see what actually makes it to market, and what turns out to be hype.

Taxpayers bailed out the big three last time they got caught building sub quality gas guzzlers - I'm sure it will not happen again - quality is up, but they still have not been paying attention to fuel economy and once again are caught behind the curve. In the end we will be left with a middlin two or a lonely one... The exec's all have their Golden Parachute's packed, so I'm sure they dont really care...

Don't be so sure Baja! I have a feeling that Big Brother is going to bail them out again and the worst part will be the fact that they will continue to build unimaginitive, uninspiring vehicles! Break out the cookie cutters!
