Intel updates the potential of wireless electric charging

Posted Aug 22nd 2008 at 7:11PM by Sebastian Blanco (http://www.autobloggreen.com/bloggers/sebastian-blanco/)

It's been over a year since we wrote about WiTricity (http://www.autobloggreen.com/2007/06/08/mit-develops-system-for-wireless-electricity-dubbs-it-witricity/), the MIT-developed wireless charging system. While we're still a long, long way from powering all-electric automobiles without heavy and expensive batteries, there is an update on the cordless power idea, this time from Intel. According to AFP (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080821/ts_afp/usitinternetenergychipcompanyintel), Intel's chief technology officer Justin Rattner demonstrated the "Wireless Energy Resonant Link" in San Francisco this week and sent enough power through the air to light up a 60 watt bulb. Too cool. This prompted an analyst to comment that, "Initially it eliminates chargers and eventually it eliminates batteries all together." Ener1 or A123 have nothing to worry about just yet, but for those of you who like to look long term, this update presents a glimpse of what might be available in a few decades.

One of those long-termer is ABG tipster Darren S., who wrote in to say, The impact this has on the auto industry is HUGE. With this technology cars would not need to have huge battery packs because power could be broadcast directly in them, rendering battery packs only for when you go "off the broadcast grid" so to speak. You could drive your electric car around and if you're in broadcast range of power, you'd never need worry about ever recharging your battery. You'd never need a drop of fuel again. Why haven't you guys written about this. The first news of it came out last year from MIT. Follow it.

We'll defend ourselves by saying that we did cover this topic last year. But we're happy to bring it up again to see where our readers stand on the topic this year. Is wireless charging going to show up in roads or parking lots any time soon?

RAN,

I actually viewed an article about this a few days ago, and was thinking of posting it.... But now you beat me to it! This really seems like a technology that could revolutionize the way we do so many things in our daily lives. Will this technology affect how we would charge our EV's? Could you imagine having charging "stations" lined up along certain routes, and all you need to do is drive by them and you get charged up. Maybe they can be located at certain intervals along roads where you are CONSTANTLY being charged as you drive! Is this even possible?

I'll tell you what.... This could make gasoline vehicles totally obsolete some day.

I'm sure it's possible, although what you describe will take a long time to see perfected and deployed nationwide; I doubt that I'll be driving on such roads in my lifetime.

I think this is a great advancement in tech! However, I think that this could get a bit to much if everyone is utilizing this method. This is a charge being sent through the air. Now correct me if I am wrong but I learned about this stuff as a kid when rubbing my feet across the carpet bare foot! I reached out and a current was sent through the air, It shocked the heck out of me! r:o:f:l:2:2:1

I will be honest I am not sure how that is going to workout! It might start a new trend, everybody will have hair like Don King! r:o:f:l:2:2:1

No no no, it doesnt actually send electricity through the air!

From what I remember reading over a year ago was this. It uses a specific radio frequency to to activate something similar to a phiezo, not sure I spelled it right, sensor in a power generator. This radio frequency basically creates motion in the sensor and that motion is transfered to electrical output.

So basically you wouldnt need to actually charge your system if it were a city wide grid. You wouldnt even need a battery pack at all in fact. You would need a sensor for each device in your vehicle and an antaena array throughout the city to keep power levels constant. The deployment of the tech is far easier than getting it all to work at higher voltages. Thats part of the beauty of it. A singel power source, large antanea in the middle of a city, can power an infinite amount of devices in a particular area.

As for this being used for electric propulsion, I am sure it will be possible but I doubt it wil be likely for a single passenger vehicle. You would need miltiple antaneas broadcasting on multiple frequencies and multiple devices for each of those frequencies. Not that it is not possible but I really dont know the power output of their conversion so who knows. What would make more sense is a subway system, train, or trolly with antanea set up along the route that give the vehicle constant power. Maybe for large byways or heavially trafficed highways but it would still be limited to city use. Like thats a bad thing hehe.

Mass transit would be the first vehicle revolution for this tech I would think. Obviously, small electronics would see its adaptation first though. I think the first few items I heard about were a cell phone charging, a fiber optic lamp thing (like the ones at Spencers Gifts), and a keyboard. With a serious grid like this broadcasting on many different frequencies who knows...maybe anti gravity transit will be a thing of the future v:i:c:t;o;ry1)

Indeed, phenominal tech that fits right in with our hopes of electric tilting vehicles with large ranges, fast 0-61 times, and Eestor power devices.

Come on M89, how the hell would you fit that into a V-1 anyhow!
