As of 1:17 AM Wednesday morning September 3 2008, I received the above error messages from BOTH the VV1 site page AND Forum. Either the sites are currently going through an update/changeover or they are gone for good. I hope it is the former with major improvements - including the signalling of a proper monitored/moderated forum with reasonable periodic project status updates.

Well it is now 4:00 Arizona time and still the site is down. Maybe we are finally getting that big overhaul Ian has been talking about for over a year and Derwin has been hinting to for a week!!

Hopefully, you are right about the site overhaul as of 0800hrs eastern time, none of the Directories are showing up. It is as if it has been moved again. I did not do a server inquiry but it appears it is under total overhaul or the plug has been pulled. I hope the Former and not the later.

This particular 404 is a "the client didn't pay the hosting cost this month" message not a "we're updating our site" message. Can't say we didn't see this coming.

LOL! It's just a "guess" on my part, but I think Venture Vehicles can afford the $5 or $10 a month to cover the hosting fees! r:o:f:l:2:2:1
Please believe me, these are all signs of good things to come. I personally have no idea why the site keeps going down, but I DO know that it is nothing to worry about.
Derwin
Derwin, don't take this the wrong way, but you have only Ian's word... and that hasn't proven to be worth a whole lot in all the time I've been here.
I'll believe it when I see it.. in pics and videos.

I know big things are coming, I just don't think this is it. Most likely a repeat of "FTR is down!" from last week - Much Ado About Nothing.

You may want to get rid of your cookies for the flytheroad.com site and go to the main page: http://flytheroad.com/ instead of the history save: http://flytheroad.com/blog/forums/ which will return the Page Not Found
and you will not get the 404 error. I gave the clip of what I got when I did. And that is via the IP or URL for both sites using multiple browsers.

This is what I think is happening also. But they just MAY be trying to install that new website and forum that was promised last year. I know for a fact it is coming (at least this is what was said!), but I don't know if this is related or not.
At any rate, they really need to get somebody over there that knows what they are doing in regards to the website. The site simply disappearing is totally unnecessary, even if trying to install a new site.

It is so funny at times what you pull up when you are waiting for things to happen:
Venture Vehicles VentureOne: (http://xprizecars.com/2008/06/venture-vehicles-ventureone.php) http://xprizecars.com/2008/06/venture-vehicles-ventureone.php
Check out the vehicle stats they give. They mention the PML inwheel motors.
As of 0950hrs eastern the "http://flytheroad.com/" site is still down.

Try the whole thing www.flytheroad.com and you get a different place holder page. I saw the xprizecars page but if you look the xprizecars is nothing official but is instead a private site like flytheroadclub.

It might not even be the FTR crew who is causing this problem. Most likely they have their web site hosted on equipment at their ISP, and the ISP might be trying to upgrade their hosting computers or routers (and not doing a good job at it.) It's happened to me more than once with my hosting company, with similar results.

If it is an 'upgrade' on FTR's end, it is pi$$poor management, to at LEAST not post a short 'sticky' saying, "There will be a few changes over the coming days, so expect some 'disruptions'. Sorry for the 'downtime', but it will be worth it."
Simple......took less than a minute!

I was never impressed with Network Solutions (FlyTheRoad's hosting company)and some of their questionable business practices. Looks like the the Whois record (and several registrant changes) on flytheroad & venturevehicles was just updated
"Database last updated on 3-Sep-2008 10:51:44 EDT."

You know, I have to agree with Rogwild... A short explanation before taking down the site would have been both EASY and helpful

That is the actual whois database which is constantly querying. It must be using your PC Time clock to associate as it shows for me:
Wed, 03 Sep 2008 09:53:41 EDT
and
Wed, 03 Sep 2008 09:51:07 EDT
That is also just the whois database update.
It shows the actual Database last updated for contact information both sites as:
Database last updated on 28-Aug-2008

I pulled up www.flytheroad.com in Chrome (quite nice btw) and after seeing that it's just doing a constant refresh/redirect pulled up the task manager. The site is eating 30% of my CPU and moving MASSIVE amounts of data for a simple website. Like between 80 and 150 KB/S transfer rates. It's not using a ton of RAM, so it must just be some redirect loop moving the same thing back and forth. Something's very wrong server side.

You may want to check your browser or PC. I checked via your methods and Opera on the constant cycle only pulled 10%, IE pulled 17% and Firefox (which I have two windows and a total of 9 tabs going to include a GOES satellite loop image constantly going) only pulled 22% of my processor. Firefox is taking about 350 mb of memory though due to all the tabs/windows. My transfer rates are a bit faster but that is because I have a pretty fast connection and it is dependent upon that so I will not go there.

Chrome (Google's new browser) shows you which tab is taking how much processor/ram/network traffic etc. It's using the Safari html renderer but their own javascript engine. Regardless, the point is that the site shouldn't be spinning its wheels like that. Something stinks in the state of California... well, more than normally ;).
Edit: checking the source code works :P. The page is blank with "Venture Vehicles" in a title tag and a meta refresh tag. It just spins and spins and spins:
10 GOTO 10

The main site home page is now up with no apparent changes, but the forum page is still down. A positive sign?
