A bipartisan group of senators has drafted a new energy bill that includes a mandate that all vehicles sold in the United States would have to be flex-fuel capable by 2020. During the GM BioFuels summit last Friday in Detroit, one of the subjects that came up was the use of flex-fuel vs. dedicated ethanol vehicles.
This according to an article on autobloggreen (http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/09/03/some-politicians-want-to-mandate-100-flex-fuel-capability/)

So, no electris then eh? And 12 year time?
My next car will be electric even if I had to convert it myself.

Amen to that. Another stupid proposal.

What I don't understand is how can they MANDATE that 100% of all vehicle be powered by ANY particular means? It doesn't make sense. Does this mean that company's will NOT be able to produce EV's?
Maybe we are misinterpreting this? I have no idea. du:n:n:o(

I have another quote:
Those who can do!
Those who can't, become politicians,
So they can lie about it!

If thats the case then I guess the V1 will HAVE to have a trailer capability....so we can pull around an aerodynamic flex fuel....Grill on a trailer! The arrogance and ignorance of those that rule our legislature amaze me on a day to day basis...and not in a good way.

Well I guess when I get home I will have to start writing all the senators again! I am not sure what kind of responce I will get being that it is this close to the presidential election, but you never know I might get through to someone!

Cool it guys. First, any proposal written into law will be open for review first. Any hint that they are excluding pure electric, CNG, or fuel cell vehicles will get expunged long before it sees the Senate floor. Second, it will never see the Senate floor.

Got to agree with Mark T on this one.

Hopefully it wont matter all that much because of the newer tech being developed for creating..growing?...bio fuels. If these tech dont reach a realistic production/price level then I would be worried.

If they modified this to state that all gasoline powered vehicles were required to be flex-fuel gasoline engines then I could almost understand this type of legislation. But I feel that trying to regulate vehicle technology to something like this would discourage automakers from pursuing r&d on other promising technologies

Indeed AZE..retooling an auto manufacturer in this flip flopping political environment is probably the biggest dilemma facing all new vehicle technologies today. Once the asshats in Congress can figure out who they support, the businesses can get on with what they should have been doing since 2000 or earlier.
